Chapter 10

The dining room, O’Connor’s Pub

“Thieves,” Luna growled. “I never forget a face. You. Yes, you. And you. And you. Thieves. The lot of you.”

They had landed right in the middle of the other realm’s dining room with every available seat occupied by travelers from the other realm. The hum of conversations mingled with the clanging sound of cutlery and people coming and going. Unlike their previous visit, no one rushed around. No one except the gnomes trying to steer clear of Luna’s threatening claws.

In an effort to limit the damage, Lexie hurried toward the double doors leading to the bar. Just as she reached them, they swung open and someone grabbed her arm.

A man with a dark scowl.

Jonathan.

“Get your cat under control,” he ordered and dragged her in the opposite direction, his stride lengthening with every step he took.

Lexie had to hurry to keep up with him or try to break free of his hold. She chose to follow because his grip felt quite determined.

She didn’t see anyone interested in the scene. A couple of servers dressed in period costume swerved out of their way but didn’t pay them any attention.

“Where are we going?” she demanded when they stepped out of the dining room. She knew they were headed to the labyrinth of corridors which could lead anywhere. Anywhere in the other realm. But there was always a destination. There had to be.

He stopped so suddenly, she almost cannoned into him.

“You need to stop barging in like this.”

“I aimed for the bar,” she growled. “It’s not my fault if there are layers upon layers to your bar.”

After a tense moment of holding her gaze, Jonathan raked his hand through his hair. “Yeah, I guess your magic is drawn to the magical… realm.”

Scowling at him, she said, “If your intention was to confuse me, then you’ve succeeded.”

“Hey, you’re the one who brought it up.”

“I was only filling in the awkward silence.” Was he actually saying there were more realms other than this one and they could be accessed through his pub?

“I think you both need to take a deep breath and calm down,” Luna suggested. “Or, you could take out your frustration on the gnomes. That would be a tremendous help to me. One of them might talk and reveal the location of my gold.”

Jonathan wagged a finger at Luna. “Leave the gnomes alone. This is a safe haven for them and I don’t want any trouble.”

“You already have trouble because you let those thieves in,” Luna hissed.

“Get over it. You don’t even know they’re the ones who took your gold. They all look the same to you.” His attention shifted and he looked over Lexie’s shoulder.

Lexie swung around and saw Octavia rushing toward them.

Catching up to them, Octavia said, “I nearly lost you.”

“Where were you?” Lexie asked.

“In the dining room. I tried to catch your attention but I tripped over a gnome. He demanded reparation.”

Still feeling incensed by the presence of the gnomes, Luna hissed, “I hope you gave him what for.
